A picture of racing writer Jonathan Powell,
Chris and Jenny Gordon have made giant strides since they moved to Morestead in 2007 to embark on a new life training racehorses for a living.

They began with four horses, a few hunters and an impressive work ethic forged during their years on the Point-to-Point circuit.

Chris describes himself as a delinquent in his early teenage years until a spell riding out for the late, great trainer Josh Gifford sparked an ambition that burns brightly to this day.

When he and Jenny were employed in Pointing yards they both became top riders with Chris recording 150 winners and Jenny achieving her own half century.

Experience learned working for John and Anne Farrant, and later training Pointers for Simon Tindall proved invaluable once they decided to set up on their own in 2007.

On their first day with runners in November that year Quarrymount delivered a timely maiden success for the yard at Fontwell in a 0-115 Handicap Hurdle.

The show was on the road though like other hopeful young trainers they found taking on big spending yards on the racecourse hugely challenging while relying on bargain basement purchases, and homebreds for their supply of horses.

Yet winners have continued to flow from Morestead with increasing regularity to the point that in 2022-2023 their yard enjoyed a stellar campaign with 52 winners and £660,720 in prize money.

Highlights included Aucunrisque landing the valuable 2023 Betfair Hurdle at Newbury in style on the same day that their 18 year old son Freddie rode the first winner Annual Invictus on the card for his dad. Ask Chris to name his best winner and he immediately points to the success of Freddie on Our Champ at Cheltenham on his 18th birthday on October 23, last year.

Freddie loves being a jockey and is now honing his skills as a conditional with Nicky Henderson in Lambourn.

Chris and Jenny took a crucial step when they bought the property at Morestead in 2013. The stable yard, outdoor school and gallops have been significantly upgraded and an office and splendid owners facility were added a few years ago.

Today the yard houses sixty horses in training with scope for more boxes if necessary.
Visiting owners clearly appreciate the fun and entertainment that goes hand in hand with having a horse trained at Morestead.

It is all part of the service provided by an engaging couple who have created a notably popular racing hub on the Downs above Winchester.
